In 1980, Shenzhen became the first of five "special economic zones" within China. These cities were afforded special trade privileges with the West. This allowed a small market town to swell rapidly into a factory megacity over a few short decades.

Shenzhen's population is estimated at 20 million (with 12 million residents.) In 2017, the city's economic output was $338 Billion, which ranks third behind Shanghai and Beijing.

"Shenzhen has become a hotbed of electronics manufacturing and tech innovation. You can find all kinds of manufacturing experts within a small geographic area. It seems like anything you'd want to make can be made in Shenzhen with blinding speed.
